What is a Team Total Bet?

A team total bet is a bet on how many points, goals, or runs one team will score in a game. Instead of betting on the combined score of both teams, you are only betting on one team’s scoring output.

Team totals are common across sports like basketball, football, baseball, hockey, and soccer. The scoring term changes by sport, but the concept stays the same.

Team Total Bet

How does a Team Total Bet work?

A team total bet works like a regular over/under bet, but it only applies to one team. The sportsbook sets a number for how many points, goals, or runs a team is expected to score. The bettor then chooses whether that team will go over or under that number.

For example, an NFL sportsbook may set the 49ers’ team total at 24.5 points.

Bet

Result needed

Outcome

49ers over 24.5

49ers score 25 or more

Win

49ers over 24.5

49ers score 24 or fewer

Loss

49ers under 24.5

49ers score 24 or fewer

Win

49ers under 24.5

49ers score 25 or more

Loss

The opponent’s score does not matter for this bet. If the 49ers win 27-24, the over 24.5 wins. If they lose 31-24, the over 24.5 loses because they only scored 24 points.

Some team totals use whole numbers, such as 24.0. If the team scores exactly 24, the bet may push, meaning the stake is usually returned. This depends on the sportsbook’s rules.

Common types of Team Total Bets

Full-game team totals

A full-game team total is based on how many points, goals, or runs one team scores across the entire game.

For example, if the Knicks have a team total of 109.5 points, the bet depends on whether they finish with 110 or more points, or 109 or fewer.

First-half team totals

A first-half team total only counts what one team scores before halftime.

For example, if the Eagles have a first-half team total of 13.5 points, the over wins if they score 14 or more points in the first half. Anything after halftime does not count.

Quarter or period team totals

Some sportsbooks also offer team totals for smaller parts of a game, such as a quarter, inning, or period.

For example, an NHL sportsbook may offer a team total for how many goals the Rangers will score in the first period.

How sportsbooks set Team Total lines

Sportsbooks set team total lines by estimating how many points, goals, or runs one team is likely to score.

They usually start with the full-game spread and total. The spread shows which team is expected to win and by how much. The game total shows the expected combined score for both teams. Together, these numbers help sportsbooks create an expected score for each side.

For example, if an NFL game total is 48.5 and one team is favored by 6.5 points, the favorite may have a team total near 27.5, while the underdog may have a team total near 21.5.

Sportsbooks may also adjust team totals based on:

  • Market activity: Heavy betting on one side can move the line or price.
  • Injuries: Missing starters can affect scoring expectations.
  • Team pace: Faster teams usually create more scoring chances.
  • Weather: Wind, rain, or snow can affect outdoor games.
  • Matchup data: Defensive strength, offensive style, and recent form can shape the number.

A team total is not just a guess. It reflects the sportsbook’s view of the game, market demand, and the latest information available before or during the event.

Team Total vs game total

Team total and game total (also called total bet) both focus on scoring, but they measure different things.

Scoring focus:

  • A team total only looks at one team’s score.
  • Game total looks at the combined score of both teams.

Opponent impact:

  • Team total does not depend directly on how many points the opponent scores. The opponent can score 10 or 40, but the bet is settled by the selected team’s score.
  • Game total depends on both teams because every point from either side counts toward the final total.

Market use:

  • Team total is useful when you have a clear opinion on one team’s offense or the opposing defense.
  • Game total is useful when you expect the whole matchup to be higher or lower scoring than the sportsbook’s line.

Bet settlement:

  • Team total is settled by the selected team’s final score.
  • Game total is settled by adding both teams’ scores together and comparing the combined score to the sportsbook’s total line.

Conclusion

A team total bet focuses on one team’s score, not the combined score of the game. It can apply to a full game, first half, quarter, inning, or period, depending on the sport and sportsbook.

Instead of needing both teams to score at a certain pace, the bet depends on one team’s performance.  That can make team totals useful when bettors have a clear angle on offense, defense, injuries, pace, or weather.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between team total and game total?

A team total focuses on one team’s score. A game total focuses on the combined score of both teams. For example, Lakers over 112.5 points is a team total. Lakers vs Warriors over 225.5 points is a game total.

Can you parlay team totals?

Yes. Many sportsbooks allow team totals in parlays. Availability depends on the sportsbook, sport, and market rules.

What happens if a team total lands exactly on the line?

If the team total is a whole number and the team lands exactly on that number, the bet may push. A push usually means the stake is returned. This depends on the sportsbook’s rules.

Can team total bets be placed live?

Yes, many sportsbooks offer live team totals during a game. The line can change as the game develops based on score, time remaining, injuries, pace, and market activity.

Do both teams need to score for a team total bet to win?

No. A team total only depends on the selected team’s score. The opposing team’s score does not directly affect the bet.

Does overtime count in team total bets?

In many sports, overtime usually counts for full-game team totals. But this depends on the sport, market, and sportsbook rules. Always check the betting rules before placing the bet.

What is a team total push?

A team total push happens when the team lands exactly on a whole-number line. For example, if the line is 24.0 and the team scores 24, the bet may push and the stake is usually returned.
